Why Wood?

Wood is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Fiberglass, steel, and concrete are produced using finite, non-renewable resources. Wood, by its nature, reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Harvested timber from sustainable forests naturally sequesters atmospheric

carbon dioxide. New forests absorb carbon and release oxygen at a higher rate than mature trees.

Environmentally responsible - Most people are aware that forests help address climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. But wood products continue to store carbon even after manufacturing. Carbon sequestered in trees remains present in wood crossarms, protecting our critically important ozone layer for decades of service. In addition, wood crossarms are naturally renewable.

Resilient - Wood utility products are more resilient than other materials in extreme weather conditions, given wood’s natural variation and overload capacity, with an excellent performance record across environments. Preservative treatment, paired with wood’s natural resilience, enables millions of wood crossarms to remain in service long beyond typical estimates.

Cost-effective - Without sacrificing other important considerations,  wood is dramatically more cost-effective than alternative manufacturing materials. A survey conducted by Engineering Data Management of all commercially available materials found that treated wood remains the most cost effective material in terms of initial and total lifecycle costs.

Extenda – Life, Top Coated Crossarms

Extenda-Life® top coating is an ultra-strong, protective shield. BROOKS Manufacturing’s durable formula bonds to the crossarm, creating a resilient barrier to environmental degradation. Top coated, Extenda-Life® crossarms include the end plates.

  • Shields against weather induced deterioration on the top of the crossarm
  • Reduces contamination build-up, lessening the tracking potential
  • Increases strength and improves reliability
  • Class I fire retardant
  • Compatible with all current pole line hardware
  • Provides substantial long-term cost savings by extending the life of the crossarm and reducing expenditures for labor, equipment, and materials
  • High tensile strength, pliable, tear resistant

Specifications
  • Long 50 year or optional 80 year life
  • Sustainably farmed from North American forests
  • Treated with low environmental impact

  • Brooks is the largest supplier of distribution crossarms in North America
